Just touched this up although it was just a practice run.

I have been doing some Photoshop on a few things that I may use later, if I ever get serious about the project I want to do. Here’s just a sample…

So far it’s just very basic stuff, but that is OK as I have never used Photoshop before. I’m sure I can make these look a lot better but I am not really interested in doing any tricks or anything.

It will be interesting to see how this all progresses and whether this project ever gets off the ground at all.

Collingwood 1953 Premiers

Posted: November 10, 2010 in Collingwood

As seen above by WEG in the Herald on Saturday evening, September 26 1953.

Below is from the Sun on Monday September 28 1953.

It’s amazing to think that Wells made these little cartoons twice a week for such a long time. I think he started with the Herald in the early 20s and worked there until 1950 (with the exception of the war years), when he was asked to retire. He then worked at the Age for another 17 years.
This below cartoon shows how the Magpies beat the Tigers to set up a Grand Final showdown with South Melbourne. The full cartoon is below.

He also reviewed the 1935 Grand Final.

And the full cartoon below.

Collingwood Win 1936 Grand Final

This was from the Argus on October 5th 1936. Not sure who the artist was, but it looks like this was just an after thought anyway.

In 1937 Shilling summed up Collingwood’s Grand Final loss to Geelong much better. I’m not sure if Shilling did the 1936 cartoon.

The Argus only produced these cartoons around finals time it seems, in the mid-late 1930s, trying to copy the success of Wells in the Herald.

Here’s a preview of the 1952 Grand Final through the pencil of Age cartoonist and Cats supporter Sam Wells.

These cartoons were available from the Age for buy back in the 50s & 60s and I wonder if anyone actually did buy them? I also wonder whether the Age still has the originals of these in their archives?

I love the look of that Cat and think that the caricatures of Lou Richards, Jack Hamilton and Bob Rose look pretty good too. I wonder why these did not become as popular as WEG’s Grand Final posters?

By the way the Collingwood Fighting Spirit did not allow the Magpies to win the match, sadly.

Actually there is a catch!!!

Ah… those wacky Japanese with their odd car names. Who in their right mind would buy a car called the Cedric?
