Aussie KFC is racist?

Posted: January 7, 2010 in Misc Thoughts

I read this morning that there is an uproar in the United States about a KFC commercial shown here in Australia during the cricket. For those who haven’t seen it, the commercial features an Aussie cricket supporter sitting amongst a crowd of West Indies fans who are wildly cheering on their team. The Aussie decides to befriend the West Indians by offering them some KFC chicken.

The problem is that Americans have gotten themselves upset about a white man offering some black people KFC and that this brings back the old stereotype of African Americans sitting around stuffing themselves full of fried chicken. Here’s a newsflash for those of you who are American… Not everything is about you!!! The people in the advertisement are West Indian cricket supporters, not African Americans, and the fried chicken stereotype does not apply to them. If the ad feature Mick offering some rum and a reefer to the crowd, then I think that you could say that stereotypes were at play. The problem with all of this is that Americans are so full of themselves that they think that the whole world revolves around them. It simply ain’t true. The whole world does not revolve around America or Americans.

No I don’t think it’s racist. Did you even read what I wrote. Then again your argument is so well thought out and compelling. I guess you were the top debater at your school!
