On Today Tonight I saw a story on how Bundaberg Christian College has brought back corporal punishment for their primary students. Educational ‘expert’ Kevin Donnelly agrees with this, but then again he also wants the good old days of the 1950s when schools only taught the three R’s and the average class size was thirty seven students.
For the last few years there has been a strong anti-bullying focus in schools but with this move Bundaberg Christian College has said that it’s OK for teachers to bully students. They have also conceded that the only way to control their students is to make them fear the being physically hit by their teachers.
It also concerns me that it is only the primary students who face this form of punishment. I could understand secondary students having capital punishment but do not think that five to twelve year olds should have to face this. I don’t care if they ‘pray’ afterwards, although I think that the teachers probably should pray for forgiveness for physically harming children who cannot defend themselves. Then again we should also remember that it is fundamentalist Christians who condone parents hitting babies with rubber pipes as a form of discipline. It seems that some fundies still live in the dark ages.
