Oscar The Grouch – I Love Trash

Here’s Oscar the Grouch from season 1 of Sesame Street singing I Love Trash. Oscar is orange here in this clip, and didn’t turn his more familiar green colour until season 2 of the show. According to Muppet Wiki Oscar turned green after a vacation in Swamp Mucky-Muddy. Oscar says that he is still orange underneath the green, he just never takes a bath. The original Oscar was yellow in colour, but this was before he appeared on Sesame Street. In sketches that Jim Henson did for Oscar he appeared as either being red or purple.

This is also the first occasion ever when the term ‘rusty trombone’ was used. We all know that today rusty trombone is a euphemism for a particularly disgusting type of sex act, but back then it was an innocent term that had no dirty connotations at all. Then again, considering it’s Oscar singing the song, perhaps there is an element of filth implied!

BTW, I still can’t get over Gordon having hair. Not only that, but he has groovy sideburns that meet up with his moustache. (Apparently this is the original Gordon, a guy named Matt Robinson, whose daughter is Holly Robinson from 21 Jump Street. Matt went on to being the head writer for the Cosby Show in the 80s. There have been three different Gordons since Sesame Street began in 1969.)

It’s amazing what you can learn by reading the Youtube comments.
