Due to all the heat and my inherent laziness, I forgot to post this picture of Aston Martin’s LMP challenger for the Le Mans 24 hours in June. This Gulf liveried car has been made in conjunction with Lola and uses Aston’s V12 engine that should enable it to compete for the title of best petrol car. If it has some luck it may even be able to score a podium place, although the battle for overall victory will undoubtedly be between the diesel powered Peugeot 908s and Audi R15s.

BMW Sauber have unveiled their 2009 F1 challenger and I must say the looks much better than I feared it may have, although I think that they have photographed it from a very flattering angle.

Toyota’s new F1 challenger, the TF109 was launched this evening. I have a feeling that this car will be very quick and may produce Toyota’s very first grand prix victory.

The 2009 edition of the Dakar rally started on the weekend, with former World Rally Champion Carlos Sainz currently leading after two stages in his VW Toureg. The highlights from Dakar can be seen on SBS.
This years Dakar rally is being run in Argentina instead of through North Africa. Last years rally was cancelled due to threats from al-Qaida terrorists, and it was decided to move the race to South America.
In the past few years many stars from the world of motorsport have undertaken the Dakar with varying degrees of success. The late Colin McRae and Carlos Sainz are two of the WRC stars who have undertaken Dakar, as has NASCAR’s Robbie Gordon in his Hummer. Jean-Louis Schlesser won the Dakar a number of times, although he will be forever remembered as the man who denied McLaren taking a clean sweep of the 1988 F1 season when he crashed into Ayrton Senna at Monza. Past winners have included World Cup Skiing Champion Luc Alphand and former WRC champions Ari Vatanen and Juha Kankkunen and Jacky Ickx, who has also won Le Mans six times as well as eight F1 grands prix for Ferrari.
