Rankin Bass was an animation studio that was famed for their stop motion animated seasonal TV specials. The most famous of these would be their Christmas special, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer aka Rudolph and the Island of Misfit Toys. Here in Australia this special, as well as Frosty The Snowman, was played every Christmas but I have not seen them on TV for many years. They are available on DVD quite cheaply from Big W.
One special that I have never seen but which sounds awesome in a ‘so bad it’s good’ way is Mad Monster Party, which was a feature length movie that was released to cinemas around Halloween 1967. It stars the great Boris Karloff who is best know for his role as Frankenstein’s monster in the 1930s and as the narrator of Chuck Jones’ The Grinch animated Christmas special.
From what I have seen of the trailer the film looks quite trippy and psychadelic, like most good things made in 1967, and seems very interesting. It looks like it was most likly a major influence on Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride.
And for those who are really interested, there’s a Mad Monster Party word seach at the Rankin Bass website.
