Yep, I’m bored and can’t really think of what to post, but since I like posting crap that no one else could be interested in, here’s a list of songs I have been listening to lately. As usual they are quite ancient.

  24. Redemption Song – Bob Marley & the Wailers
  25. Never Let Me Go – The Black Sorrows

That’s a pretty eclectic mix if I may say so myself.

The bogans have voted. AC/DC took out the top 5 positions of Triple M’s Ultimate 500 Rock Songs countdown. They had eight songs in the top 31. Now don’t get me wrong, I like AC/DC and all that, I even have quite a few of their cds lying around the house, yet I also like some variety. Now I know that whenever I tune into Triple M they will definitely be playing an AC/DC song. Do we really want to hear T.N.T eight times a day seven days a week? (Also Thunderstruck at #1 WTF!!!)

Some of the other choices in this countdown were quite… odd… to say the very least. Guns ‘N’ Roses insipid cover of Knocking On Heavens Door at #53 and the highest Stones song being It’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll (But I like It) at #61 show just how odd the voting was. I could do a list of my own top 500, but that would end up being really tedious for me. Here’s just a list of the songs I’ve been most listening to lately. (Where did they come on the list?)

1. Hey Joe – Jimi Hendrix
2. Shake Your Moneymaker – Fleetwood Mac
3. The Seeker – The Who
4. Happy – The Rolling Stones
5. Comin’ Home – Delaney & Bonney & Friends
6. Mama Kin – Aerosmith
7. Lola – The Kinks
8. SWLABR – Cream
9. Hush – Deep Purple
10. Immigrant Song – Led Zeppelin
11. Three Button Hand Me Down- The Faces
12. I Want To Take You Higher – Sly & The Family Stone
13. Rocks Off – The Rolling Stones
14. Evil Ways – Santana
15. Days Like This – Van Morrison
16. Seven Nation Army – The White Stripes
17. Behind Blue Eyes – The Who
18. Dream On – Aerosmith
19. Hard To Handle – The Black Crowes
20. Superstition – Beck, Bogert & Appice

What I have been listening to lately…

There is a point that I want to make about things music. Firstly I read a letter in the newspaper complaining about the lack of Elvis Presley songs on the radio. This letter writer actually spoke to someone from Gold 104 who told them that their station only plays rock and roll music. Huh! I always thought that Elvis was the King of Rock ‘N’ Roll. Gold 104 cannot use the argument that they only play modern music as they are known as ‘the good time oldies’ station and play lots of Beatles, Rolling Stones and Fleetwood Mac. I do know that they don’t play too many songs from before 1970, but Elvis still had a lot of good songs from after his 1968 comeback that would be a good fit on their playlist, as songs such as Burning Love and Suspicious Minds are two of the greatest rock songs ever recorded.

I haven’t done this for a while but here are the 15 or so songs that I have been listening to most on my iPod. While I don’t claim that the songs that I listen to are the greatest ever made, they are sure a darn lot better than anything that is played on commercial FM radio here in Melbourne, especially Fox FM and NOVA.

You’ll probably recognise the names of most of these groups but perhaps not the songs listed.

  1. Give The People What They Want – The Kinks
  2. Happy – The Rolling Stones
  3. Dolly Dagger – Jimi Hendrix
  4. Hey Joe – Jimi Hendrix
  5. Comin’ Home – Delaney & Bonnie & Friends
  6. Piece Of Crap – Neil Young
  7. Three Button Hand Me Down – The Faces
  8. Redemption Song – Bob Marley
  9. Ain’t Too Proud To Beg – The Temptations
  10. Hush – Deep Purple
  11. Motherless Children – Eric Clapton
  12. Love The One You’re With – Stephen Stills
  13. The Seeker – The Who
  14. Long Live Rock – The Who
  15. Hurt – Johnny Cash

I know that most of these songs are ancient and most people will think I’m an old fart for listening to them, but remember that I grew up in the 80s, a time when most music was horrible. A bit like today, really, where awful crap by totally derivative singers as Lady Ga-Ga can reach the top of the charts. The only thing original about Lady Ga-Ga is that she started a rumour about her having a penis, I don’t think that Madonna ever did that!

Speaking of music, the other day I was watching MAX on Foxtel when they played Janis Joplin’s Mercedes Benz. This originally was a song that Janis sang acapalla to show the strength of her incredible voice. Unfortunately some producer or DJ has discovered this song and decided to remix it with synthesizers and drum machine beats, ala Elvis’s A Little Less Conversation a few years ago. Yes, it is as horrible as it sounds and poor Janis must be turning over in her grave at the way her song has been ruined. Then again last year some talentless DJ thought they’d be creative by merging The Doors’ Riders On The Storm with Blondie’s Rapture. Arrrrggghhhh!

I know that everyone wants to know what I have been listening to lately. In fact, thanks to blogging, Facebook and Twitter, everyone wants to know everything about everyone… Or is it that everyone wants everyone else to know everything about themselves?! Mmm! Anyway, everyone else is writing about every single mundane part of their insignificant lives, so why cant I? Anyway, here are twenty five songs that have been on high rotation on my iPod!

With my new computer on the way one thing that I have to do that I loath, is to reload all of my music onto it. I have to do this to keep my iPod up to date. Whilst I don’t mind having to load up all of my many cds, there is a ton of stuff that I downloaded to my old computer that I have now lost. (The lesson is always make a back up copy of all your MP3 and photo files)

Anyway, in getting ready to do this onerous task, I thought I would list some songs that will eventually make it back onto my iPod.

One group that will definately make it back onto my iPod is The Rolling Stones. I had over 200 of their songs on my iPod previously, including a downloaded copy of the unreleased and banned final Decca single that they made in 1969. (Because it was banned, it is quite easy to find online!) Here are my 10 favourite Stones’ songs.

  1. Sympathy For The devil
  2. 2000 Light Years From Home
  3. Happy
  4. Jumpin’ Jack Flash
  5. Shine A Light
