Here is a cartoon in The Age from Monday September 22, 1958. The cartoon is by Samuel Garnet Wells, who was an Age cartoonist for many years. He is best remembered for giving Geelong their ‘Cats’ nickname.

Here’s a cartoon from The Age by Wells, Monday September 28, 1953 to show Collingwood’s drought breaking premiership win. At this time it had been 17 years since the last Magpie premiership which back then must have seemed like such a long time. Who’d have thought that it would take 32 years after our 1958 win for us to again taste premiership glory? Or that we’d have to wait another 20 years after our 1990 triumph? Lou Richards features prominantly in Sammy Wells’ cartoons.
Here’s how Armstrong of The Argus recorded this monumental event, with the Mighty Magpies knocking the Geelong cat off it’s perch at the top of the VFL Premiership ladder.
